This article will provide details to why inventory for ESX 4.0 servers does not get generated.
Inventory will only be generated on VirtualCenter servers where virtual hosts have been discovered. If VirtualCenter is accessible on a server, but has no virtual hosts accessible, no inventory will be generated. Where virtual servers are discovered, any virtual machines they host will be automatically defined in Deployment Manager so that you can target the virtual machines for further tasks such as inventory gathering or adoption under management.
