M100684: Enabling polling for jobs on a Windows Server 2003 distribution server

In order for child distribution servers to be able to poll for distribution jobs from a parent Windows Server 2003 distribution server, some additional manual configuration is required. This article describes these additional configuration steps.  

 

For distribution servers running Windows Server 2003, additional configuration is required on parent distribution servers to allow child distribution servers to successfully poll for jobs. Complete the following configuration steps:

  1. Open Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager (from the Start menu, select All programs > Administrative Tools > Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager).
  2. Expand the distribution server name in the console tree.
  3. Right-click Application Pools, and select New > Application Pool... from the context menu.
    The Add New Application Pool dialog is displayed.
  4. In the Application Pool ID field, type ManageSoftAppPool.
  5. Click OK to create a new application pool.
  6. Expand the console tree to show websites listed under Default Web Site
  7. Right-click the ManageSoftJQ website and select Properties from the context menu.
    The ManageSoftJQ Properties page is displayed.
  8. Select the Directory Security tab.
  9. Click Edit in the Anonymous access and authentication control section. 
    The Authentication Methods dialog is displayed.
  10. Select the Anonymous access check box.
    The Anonymous User Account dialog is displayed.
  11. Specify the username and password of an account that is a member of the MGS Distributors security group.
  12. Click OK three times to close the dialogs.

The parent distribution server is now ready to accept polling requests from child distribution servers.
