RVY200515: How to perform SNMP discovery and inventory from RVP

Purpose

This article describes the steps required to obtain SNMP inventory from SNMP enabled network devices via RayVentory Portal (RVP) 11.1 and higher.

Credentials

SNMP v1 & v2c devices only require a community string value, so a customers network team needs to be consulted in order to find out what this will be for each device (the default one is Public):

SNMP v3 devices on the other hand can also only require a community string name (Reportable), but it they can also be configured to require additional security levels of access too (Authentication, Privacy, Authentication & Privacy) which means that a customers network team will need to be involved in order to create the relevant v3 credentials:

Discovery

An SNMP connection can be created manually, or by having RVP perform an SNMP probe action (UDP port 161) against devices that it discovers.

Inventory

SNMP inventory can be gathered either as part of a discovery action or as a separate inventory one.
